Leslie Butler lives in northern Virginia where she breeds rough Collies. She started her kennel, Whitemoor Collies, in 2000. The kennel name is taken from her maiden name and the Celtic word for promontory, which is a moor (her family lives on one). The name honors her Celtic heritage as well as that of her breed.

AKC: How did you get started in breeding dogs?

Leslie: I started out by showing my Collie in conformation. I realized that many breeders kept the best for themselves. I’m also fascinated by genetics so after much studying of the breed and talking to other breeders in my Collie club I decided that I wanted my own breeding program.

AKC: What is the most important thing to know about your breed?

Leslie: They are a versatile breed. They truly can do it all. I have had dogs that excelled in agility, herding, conformation and therapy work. Collies love to have a job to do.

AKC: What is your favorite question to ask potential puppy buyers?

Leslie: I like to know what they plan to do with their dog; if they are looking for a pet or do they plan to participate in dog sports or want a show prospect.

AKC: What are the main qualities you look for in potential owners?

Leslie: I like owners who stay in touch with me while they are looking for or waiting for a puppy. I want to make sure that they realize getting a pet is a big commitment and that the dog will be cared for.

AKC: What is the best advice you would give to novice breeders?

Leslie: Study the breed before having your first litter. Talk to other breeders. Have an understanding of genetics. Don’t just put two dogs together and hope for the best! Many qualities can be lost in a single generation.

AKC: Do you participate with your dogs in AKC sports?

Leslie: Yes, my dogs are busy. Aside from conformation, we participate in herding and agility. I have done some rally. I want to know that my dogs have herding ability even though I don’t have my own stock. I want to make sure we are preserving their instinct.

AKC: What do you like best about breeding dogs?

Leslie: I love watching the personalities come out in the puppies. I like exposing them to new things. Once their eyes and ears are open I find them to be the most fun.

AKC: Do you have a favorite breeding story?

Leslie: One of my dogs had a difficult pregnancy – a possible adverse drug reaction which sent her into liver failure. She had 10 puppies and needed a c-section. Her mother – Gabby – came into the whelping room and started caring for the puppies and looked at me as if to say, “I have this; you’re clueless.” Kayla was glad that her mother was there to help. It showed me what an amazing breed I have chosen.
